week 10: connection questions???

CHAPTER 8
1. how does Jem respond to Atticus's compliment about the snowman? What does this suggest about their relationship? 
It shows that he is not sad and does not feel uncomfortable

2. what does the town's response to the fire at Miss Maudie's house reveal about Maycomb's universe of obligation in this chapter? A community's universe of obligation includes the circle of individuals and groups toward whom obligations are owed, to whom rules apply, and whose injuries call for amends. In other words, a community's universe of obligation consists of those its members believe are worthy of respect and protection.
It will not be easy and Maycomb is a very prejudiced area 

CHAPTER 9
1. what is Aunt Alexandra's vision for what is "lady-like"? how does Scout respond to that vision? what does Atticus think about Scout's conformity to gender roles? 
A lady-like person does not swear. Scout does not care. Atticus scolds Scout 

2. what metaphor does Alexandra use to describe the role that Scout hould play in her father's life because she is a girl? How does her repetition of the metaphor help establish her tone and indicate her feelings about Alexandra's attempt to influence her? 
she is called young lady. Alexandra uses this to make her more civilised and lady like

CHAPTER 10 
1. what do we learn at the beginning of chapter 10 about the way that Scout and Jem feel about Atticus?How does Atticus's defense of Tom Robinson reinforce those feelings?
They think of him as a weak person physically but mentally strong. He thinks Tom is innocent but knows that nothing can be done to persuade the jury.

2. Atticus instructs Scout and Jem that "it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." what does this advice mean? look for evidence in the ext to help you explain.
It is not good to kill a mockingbird

CHAPTER 11
1. what does Mrs. Dubose mean when she says, "What's this world coming to when a Finch goes against his raising?" In what ways does Atticus go against his raising? When is "going against your raising" a good thing? When is it bad? 
When someone acts differently compared to their family members. Atticus goes against his raising by defending a negro. It is good if you are raised to do bad things, but it is bad if your family does good practices

2. After Jem vandalises Mrs. Dubose's flower bed, he and Scout wait in thier living room for Aticus to come home. Scou narrates: "Two geological ages laer, we heard the soles of Atticus's shoes scrape the front steps. The screen door slammed, there was a pause-Atticus was at the hat rack in the hall-and we heard him call "Jem!" His voice was like winter wind. Atticus switched on the ceiling light in the livingroom and found us there, frozen still." What literary device does Harper Lee use to communicate how Scout and Jem feel upon Atticus's arrival? 
Harper Lee uses a simile to show Atticus's voice was cold and emotionless and she uses ood vocabulary such as the word 'frozen' to show how still they were when Atticus arrived
